Dana Newman is an independent literary agent based in Los Angeles. She represents practical and narrative nonfiction books in the areas of memoir, biography, business, self-help, parenting, current affairs, popular science and technology, lifestyle/wellness, and popular culture by authors with strong platforms. On the fiction side, she looks for character-driven stories that are both literary and commercial.

Dana is also a transactional attorney, advising creators and businesses on contracts, copyrights, trademarks, and licensing. She focuses her practice on publishing, technology and start-ups.

Before working in publishing, Dana was in-house counsel to Moviola and its affiliates, providers of entertainment and communications technologies. She combines her professional insight, educational background (B.A. in Comparative Literature from U.C. Berkeley, J.D. from University of San Francisco School of Law), and a lifelong love of reading to provide a sophisticated, innovative approach to her role as a literary agent.

She wrote “Copyright Grants: as Powerful as Kryptonite?” published in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, and co-authored the chapter on Technology and Intellectual Property Rights in the book Emerging Companies Guide: A Resource for Professionals and Entrepreneurs, Second Edition (American Bar Association 2011).
